Secondary Initiatives encompass several initiatives focusing on middle and high school programs and we work closely with our Secondary Success and College Readiness staff to ensure our students are prepared for the future they choose.  Through our department, we are currently supporting schools, staff and communities with the following:

Julie Hunter, Director of Secondary Initiatives

Julie oversees the planning and implementation of the 5-period trimester schedule that is planned to begin in the fall of 2020 in our four comprehensive high schools as well as Raisbeck Aviation High School.  Julie also supports the academic planning for transitioning sixth-grade students to middle school by collaborating with content specialists and college and career staff to ensure we have robust sixth through-12th-grade pathways and course offerings for our students to engage in.

Diana Garcia

Diana Garcia, Director of Education Specification and Transition Planning for New Construction

Diana is responsible for overseeing the project planning and construction of our 2016 school bond projects, including Des Moines Elementary School, Glacier Middle School, Highline High School and the renovation of the Olympic Interim Site. She led the planning for enrollment, communications and facilities for the transition of sixth grade to middle school in fall 2019. Diana has also served Highline Public Schools as an outstanding elementary and middle school principal, and has expertise leading special projects for various departments.
