Unemployment Fraud: How to Protect Your Identity

Last week, we shared that a number of false unemployment claims have been made using Highline staff member’s names and social security numbers. This continues to be a problem. Here is how to prevent a false unemployment claim using your name. 

Connect your Secure Access Washington (SAW) account to the Employment Security Department (ESD). A SAW account was required to enroll in SEBB medical benefits last fall so most staff members already have one.

When you connect your SAW account to ESD, your social security or identification number is connected to a secure login so no one can create a false unemployment claim using your information.


How to Link your SAW Account to ESD

  1. Navigate to the SAW website.  
  2. Login with your username and password. If you forgot either, use the links provided. 
  3. On the Welcome page, select the red button Add A New Service
  4. Select Browse List of Services
  5. Select Employment Security Department.
  6. Select Your Wage History by clicking the green Apply button. 
  7. Select OK.
  8. Select Your Wage History underlined in blue. 
  9. Select Continue to go to the ESD website. 
  10. Select For Yourself.
  11. Select Continue for the first option: If you’re an unemployment claimant, a job seeker, or if you want to send us a message or look up your past wages
  12. Select Verify My Identity.
  13. Put in your name, SSN, address and date of birth. 
  14. Once you enter this info, you will be directed to your wage history for the last eight quarters. 
    1. If you see your wage history, you can exit the screen. 
    2. If you see a notice that says your SSN already exists: 
      1. If the SSN is linked to an email address you recognize, select Recover Account. 
      2. If you do not recognize the email address connected to your SSN, file a fraudulent claim report with the Employment Security Department on their website and notify Human Resources. 

How to Create a SAW Account 

  1. Navigate to the SAW website.  
  2. Select Sign Up to the right of the screen. 
  3. Input your name and email address, and create a password 
  4. Check your email for an activation link and click on the link. 
  5. Log in with your username and password. 
  6. After creating a SAW account, follow the steps above to connect it to ESD.
