Jim Fortner, a former Highline teacher and coach, passed away on March 24. He lived in Arizona with his wife. He taught science and PE from 1969 to 2003 primarily at Tyee and Evergreen high schools, with short stints at Pacific and Chinook middle schools. He coached football and wrestling from 1969 to 1978, and was the head football coach at Evergreen from 1978 to 2003.
Despite being born without legs, he grew up to become an extraordinary athlete, playing baseball, basketball and golf into his 70s. He played baseball at the University of Washington while majoring at the College of Education.
Our thoughts go out to Jim’s family and friends.
