Special Education Staff Memo - March 17

Please follow the recommendations below.

  • As a district, we are not providing instructional remote learning because it cannot be provided equitably for all students. It is acceptable to provide optional resources to support what students have already learned.
  • All meetings should be held via alternative methods and not in schools. Please use the hyperlink below to access information regarding ZOOM meetings created by Haley Wagner, Personalized Learning Specialist.
  • Please reach out to families of students on your caseloads regularly. Document this by creating a note in the Notes section under the Demographic tab in IEP Online. Create one note per student and add each contact attempt to this note.
  • Initial evaluation timelines will be extended to when students return to school, unless you are ready to hold the meeting and can do this remotely.
  • Re-evaluation timelines must be met. Please utilize file reviews, information that can be gained from interviews or rating scales with adults and any information you currently have.
  • IEP timelines must be met. Utilize alternative methods for meetings as noted in the first bullet above. After meetings are held and the IEP is locked, email Laura Lumsden with the student name for the count. If you are currently working on an FBA or BIP, you can use information gathered through interviews to complete these. Please reach out to Laurie Giddings if you need assistance regarding interview forms or questions.
  • Third-quarter progress reports should still be completed and communicated to families. If an email address is available, please send a copy of the progress report. If not, please communicate the student’s progress verbally during your check-ins with families.
  • To note attendance at any meeting, clearly state in the PWN under Other Factors who attended and their role and the reason for the alternative method of meeting.
  • C to B timelines for students turning 3 must be met by the student’s 3rd birthday. This process will be communicated directly to Early Childhood evaluation staff through Amy Chamberlin, Early Childhood Program Manager.
  • Please watch for emails from Special Education Specialists regarding professional learning opportunities accessed through ZOOM during closure.

Good Hygiene

Please remind your student of the importance of following good hygiene practices that prevent the spread of communicable diseases:

  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a sleeve or a tissue.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, or use alcohol hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick. See our guidelines for when to stay home.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
