As we move into this new phase of operating our system remotely as much as possible, I am mindful of the essential staff members who are still on the job. I recognize that these individuals have the same concerns about their families and their own health as we all do, yet they continue to show up and serve. These include our custodians, our nutrition service workers, safety and security officers, nurses and the paraeducators who have volunteered to provide childcare for our community’s healthcare workers and first responders. I want to assure you that my team and I are doing all we can to create the conditions to keep these essential staff safe at work. That includes social distancing protocols, screening children before they enter childcare, and providing personal protective equipment.
During school closure we will also have central office staff from Business Services coming in regularly, along with cabinet members, to ensure essential functions including payroll keep going. I will also be present on days that Diane, who staffs our mailroom, will be at central office, so she isn’t there alone. I and other central office staff will also be assisting nutrition services staff with meal distribution and supporting those providing childcare in the weeks ahead. I will not ask of you anything I won’t ask of myself and fellow cabinet members. We are all in this together, and working together we will get through it.
More than ever before I am deeply grateful to each and every one of you for your commitment, flexibility and professionalism during this challenging time. Thank you.
Stay safe and strong and know that you are not alone. Together #WeAreHighline.
