Dual Language Updates
With our new reality, we wanted to reach out to offer additional resources and support to you as we begin to navigate how to provide distance learning to all of our DL students.
Language Expectations (All)
While many of you may be working on sending out assignments in both English and the target language, please keep in mind that your students and families’ needs come before all else. If sending assignments in the target language will make it difficult for some students to access instruction, please feel free to adapt as needed. Sending out instructions in the languages of your families and helping families be able to support their children’s learning is more important right now than sticking to our typical expectations for language use.
Guidance for DL Assignments (Elementary)
Attached is a guidance document with ideas for how to provide assignments in English and the target language along with suggested strategies to helping make online learning accessible to students who may have emerging skills in the language. Again, feel free to use your professional judgment in terms of asking students to use the target language for their work. There will be more support coming from our elementary TLL team.
IStation Parent Portal: At-home access (Elementary)
We hope each of you has been able to connect with your DL Coordinator to receive the needed information to share with your students and families about the at-home access that is available for Istation. The “Parent Portal” was turned on for all dual language students enrolled in Istation. As you should have heard, some students need to have a password change. We have given guidance to your DL Coordinator around how to solve this, so please reach out to them if you notice students at-home access is disabled. Here are links to access the instructions for families in English and Spanish.
Communication Tools (All)
Most DL schools are using SeeSaw or Google Classrooms for communication with students and families. If you need documents for your families to help them with how to access these tools, here are links to those instructions:
Google Classrooms: English, Spanish, & Vietnamese
Online Dual Language Resources (All)
Many of you have been sharing resources to use both in online teaching and learning and to share with families. We have compiled some of these resources in the following two GoogleDocs. Please note while many of these resource are free to access, some listed resources may contain sites that require subscriptions or login for access. We are also attaching a document with district-vetted resources in multiple languages that may be helpful.
As always, we thank you for all of your exceptional work to support our students in this new reality and hope that all of you are staying safe and healthy! Please feel free to reach out to the Dual Language team for any questions or support you need!
