Secondary Distance Learning

Instruction for Grades 6-12

Recognizing that distance learning will not equate directly to a classroom experience, we will prioritize critical knowledge and skills for students during the remainder of second semester 2019-20. At the high school level, students engaging in this instruction will generate high school credit toward graduation when completing assignments and demonstrating standards competency in a manner consistent when schools are open.

Instruction will be provided by teachers through:

  • Weekly communication to students/families
  • Weekly assignments by classroom teachers
  • Weekly support/feedback to individual students, informed by evidence of student learning

Teachers are expected to meet in collaborative teams on a regular basis to identify strategies for the effective delivery of new instruction paired with meaningful assignments designed to demonstrate understanding and mastery of new content and skills.

For each course (period), teachers will assign one assignment and/or progression of learning for students to complete each week.

In addition, teachers will provide recommendations for supplemental learning to practice and reinforce previously learned skills, including making up work not completed prior to March 12. Students are encouraged to use these resources as family schedules and circumstances allow in addition to completing newly assigned teacher instruction/assignments,

In order to support equitable access by students and families:

  • Electronic devices will be provided to students without access to a device at home*
  • Schools will continue to use electronic platforms such as Google Classroom, and will not add any new platforms
  • Communication to families will be in the family’s primary language whenever practicable
  • Required instructional activities/assignments will be assigned with flexible time frames, allowing for access and completion within a variety of student/family schedules
  • Supplemental learning resources will be encouraged, but not required
  • Family-determined learning opportunities will be encouraged and celebrated
